„Pro-choice” Isn’t About the Woman’s Body – It’s About the Child’s Life: The Case of Adriana Smith

The pro-choice movement claims that abortion is about a woman’s right to decide what happens with her own body. But a dramatic case in the United States shows that, in reality, the target of the choice is not primarily the woman’s body, but the life of another human being – her unborn child.

Adriana Smith, a 30-year-old woman from the U.S. state of Georgia, has been brain-dead for 13 weeks following a stroke. Doctors are keeping her on life support because, at the time of the incident, she was 9 weeks pregnant. A law in Georgia regarding brain death – not abortion – has required this course of action. Since then, the baby has continued to develop in her womb, receiving oxygen and nutrients through the medical support provided to the mother.

Adriana Smith’s family has already chosen a name for the baby: Chance – a testimony to the hope that this child has a chance at life. Although it’s uncertain whether he will survive long enough to be delivered, each day gained is another chance for him. Yet some pro-choice activists are demanding that Adriana be disconnected from life support, which would also mean the death of Chance. But their stance contradicts what they claim to advocate: the mother’s choice.

In this case, the mother can no longer make any decisions. Before the stroke, the pregnancy was progressing normally, and abortion was not in question. Why, then, are pro-choice activists now demanding disconnection that would automatically result in the baby’s death? Because to them, the child does not matter, does not exist, has no rights, and any possibility of continuing his life must be erased. Doctors know that there is no hope of Adriana Smith recovering. But for the baby, medicine still offers two options: one where he dies for sure, and another where he has a real chance at life.

This is the real issue: if it’s only about “a woman’s body,” as is often claimed, then what do we do when the woman can no longer decide, but another life – within her body – continues to exist? Why insist on disconnecting her, when we know it will mean the child’s certain death? The pro-choice position does not recognize the unborn child as a human being with rights of his own. For them, rights begin only if acknowledged by the mother. According to this ideology, the child exists only if the mother recognizes him as a “person.” And if the mother can no longer decide, the child is treated as if he doesn’t exist.

But if Chance is born, will he suddenly become a real, living, human child? Or must we acknowledge that he has been so from the very first moment – from the moment of conception?

Adriana Smith’s case forces us to face a reality that is hard to deny: where there is a growing child, there is life. And life deserves to be protected, by helping the woman who carries it in her womb. Even in this dramatic situation, that is how the child is being helped – by supporting his mother’s body. That is not barbaric. What is barbaric is to disconnect the mother knowing the child will die immediately. This is the civilization of support, even in extreme situations. It is what Adriana Smith wanted: a living child.
