The assassination of Charlie Kirk risks taking the culture war in the United States to a whole new level. In the two failed assassination attempts on Donald Trump, conservatives breathed a sigh of relief that the attacks had not succeeded. But now, things are different.
Charlie Kirk was beloved by young people. His popularity far exceeded any accusations of radicalism. In debates with progressives, he was far more open than most conservatives. His opponents did not feel despised by him. He was invited to many debates because he had the rare ability to remain calm even in the midst of heated exchanges. Hatred had no place in his words or in his heart.
The danger that the more radical wing of conservatives might seek revenge, however, is very real. And if it turns out that the assassin was a radical progressive, the fury will only grow stronger.
For those in Eastern Europe, the hatred directed against him after his death recalls the hatred of the communists toward those they murdered in political prisons. From those prisons remains a Christ-like testament, a final word: “Do not avengeus.”
Revenge means paying back in the same coin. But the one who returns evil for evil becomes like the one who first committed it.
This is why American conservatives need to resist the call to vengeance and instead debate as Charlie Kirk did – using true arguments and keeping their hearts open to the other side. In this way, they will carry forward Charlie Kirk’s spirit – calm, steady, openhearted – rather than that of the man who took his life or of those who justify and even rejoice in his death.
Charlie Kirk, if you have found rest in God, help those who are grieving and angry to follow your example, not the path of the one who cut short your earthly life.
